What is asphalt?

To The Point Notes

Asphalt , which is also known as bitumen, which is a black coloured, sticky and highly viscous liquid. We also say that it is a semi – solid form of petroleum. The asphalt may be found in natural deposites or it may be produced as refined product. It is a classed as pitch (which is a viscoelastic polymer which as we mentioned here may be made or natural).

Bioasphalt UPSC

Bioasphalt

In simple world bioasphal is a type of asphalt or its alternative which is made from non – petroleum based resourses or renewable resources.

What are the sources of bioasphalts?

There are various sources of bioasphalt which includes sugar, molasses, rice, corn, starch, trees, coconut waste, dried sewage effluents, peanut oil/canola oil/ palm oil wastes, vegetable oils, lignin, cellulose, gum resins, natural latex rubber etc.

Bioasphalts (which are based on non – petroleum resources) binders can be coloured in different colours, which can help in reducing the temperatures of highway or roads surfaces. With this we can deal the other problems related to over heating of roads, specially in summer days.

Bitumen can also produced from the residue vaccum tower bottoms, produced in the process of refining used oils, which are usually dumped into landfills or burned.
